NJ Governor Resigns
Friday August 13, 2004
When does a politician's personal life impact political life? Is an extramarital affair, alone, sufficient grounds for resignation -- either from office or from candidacy for office? Many citizens say "yes" and many say "no" and yesterday NJ Governor Jim McGreevey (D) took the public position that the "yeah's" outweigh the "nea's" when he announced his resignation.
Might there be more to the story of the Governor's resignation than an illicit homosexual affair? After all, the Governor reportedly placed his lover -- an Israeli citizen, Golan Cipel -- on the state payroll. Or was it sexual harassment? In addition, Cipel has been linked to major McGreevey donors who are under federal investigation; McGreevy's name reportedly appears 83 times on one indictment. Of course, these issues were not addressed in the "I am gay" announcement.
