Focus on CBS
Tuesday September 14, 2004
The focus on whether or not the documents in a CBS news story aired last week are genuine or fake is shifting to CBS itself. NY Times columnist William Safire calls for an independent investigation, and Media Research Center Brent Bozell insists that CBS should apologize.
At the same time, USA Today reportedly has received copies of the documents from someone in Texas who wishes to remain anonymous, and CNN quotes a Harvard business school professor who says Bush confided that "Dad's friends" got him into the Guard. US News & World Report says that Bush significantly fell short of his required training drills in 72-73 (36 of 44) and 73-74 (12 of 44).
Conservatives are claiming the CBS documents originated with the Kerry campaign -- a claim that has not been substantiated. I still can't understand why anyone would go to the trouble to forge documents and then not insure that the output device was contemporary to the time, unless they were intended to divert attention.
