What's Next for WA State?

Thursday February 17, 2005
Two Republicans have unsuccessfully tried to recall Republican Secretary of State Sam Reed for misfeasance or malfeasance, assserting that he should not have certified the results of the Washington Governor's race that put Democrat Christine Gregoire in office.

Superior Court Judge Chris Wickham found that the recall petition lacked substance in all nine charges. "Despite a great deal of attention to the conduct of the 2004 election, there has been no showing that the secretary of state conducted his office with bad faith or unreasonably exercised the discretion granted him by law," he was reported saying in the Olympian.

The two filing the suit were characterized by the Seattle PI as "Seattle Public Schools gadflies" and reportedly plan to appeal to the State Supreme Court.

There is an online recall petition, even though the Olympian reported that "only Washington ... requires a showing of cause before a judge prior to a petition campaign going forward."
