Washington State Governor's Vote Stands

Monday June 6, 2005
In the never-ending long saga of November's gubernatorial election, John Bridges, an eastern Washington judge, ruled Monday that the election of Christine Gregoire stands. He "soundly reject[ed] [Republican] claims that wrongdoing, fraud and felon voters robbed Dino Rossi of the election." He also subtracted four votes from Rossi's total, based on sworn statements from felons who said that they had voted for Rossi without having their voting rights reinstated.
[A]n election such as this should not be overturned because one judge picks a number and applies a proportional deduction analysis. To do so within the context of the facts of this case would constitute the ultimate act of judicial egotism and judicial activism...
Republicans are expected to appeal the decision. Rossi has conceded, although with a parting shot that the "political makeup of the Washington state Supreme Court" was not conducive to an appeal. National Republicans have been urging him to run against junior Sen. Maria Cantwell (D) in 2006.
