Gas at $6: State of Emergency Declared in Georgia
Wednesday August 31, 2005
One of our
Forum members reports that gas prices in Altanta "went from 2.59 to 2.99 to 3.09 to 3.29 to 6.00" in one day. Late Wednesday, Governor Sonny Perdue declared a state of emergency in order to implement the state's anti-price gouging law. Last year the law was used to "keep hotels and motels from overcharging people fleeing from Hurricane Ivan," according to the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution (registration required).
"We will not tolerate the exploitation of Georgia consumers as we recover from the effects of Hurricane Katrina," Purdue said. The governor also encouraged Georgians to "stay home" over the Labor Day weekend to conserve gas. Georgia is reportedly suffering from spot shortages of gas. AJC says that "Colonial Pipeline, the largest pipeline distributing fuel into Georgia, expects to be largely operational by the Labor Day weekend." (emphasis added)
Update: Governor's Press Release; Attorney General's description of O.C.G.A. Sections 10-1-393.4 and 10-1-438 - Emergency Price Controls
