Nepotism + Cronyism -- Here We Go Again

Thursday September 22, 2005
A tip from Politry: President Bush has nominated the wife of DHS Chief Chertoff’s chief of staff DHS Chief Chertoff’s chief of staff’s daughter-in-law to head US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) ... oh, and her her uncle is Air force General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Washington Post reports :
The head of ICE is required by statute to have at least five years of experience in both law enforcement and management.
The 36 year-old lawyer has no management experience; her "law enforcement" experience is in the Justice Department as Chertoff's chief of staff and in Brooklyn as a federal prosecutor. Her most recent post? Special assistant to the President, handling personnel issues.

The news about her appointment came through Congressional review and increased scrutiny of DHS appointees since the Michael Brown fiasco. Sen. George V. Voinovich (R-OH) stated publicly that he did not think she was qualified; he later met with her privately and now says he will vote for her appointment, but gave no details about why he changed his mind.
