Roberts Sworn In As Chief Justice

Thursday September 29, 2005
Updated 2.58 PM PDT
John Roberts has been sworn in as the 17th Chief Justice of the US the Supreme Court. As our US Liberals Guide forecast last week, the Senate confirmed (78-22) Roberts as the new Chief Justice of earlier today; he is the youngest member of the Court. Half of the Senate Democrats voted for confirmation. The Court begins its 2005-2006 session on 3 October.

Basie! outlines Senate votes for all sitting Justices. With the exception of Clarence Thomas (52-48), all were genuinely overwhelming (from 87-9 to no opposition - four times).

The 22 dissenting votes:
  • Akaka (D-HI)
  • Bayh (D-IN)
  • Biden (D-DE)
  • Boxer (D-CA)
  • Cantwell (D-WA)
  • Clinton (D-NY)
  • Corzine (D-NJ)
  • Dayton (D-MN)
  • Durbin (D-IL)
  • Feinstein (D-CA)
  • Harkin (D-IA)
  • Inouye (D-HI)
  • Kennedy (D-MA)
  • Kerry (D-MA)
  • Lautenberg (D-NJ)
  • Mikulski (D-MD)
  • Obama (D-IL)
  • Reed (D-RI)
  • Reid (D-NV)
  • Sarbanes (D-MD)
  • Schumer (D-NY)
  • Stabenow (D-MI)
