Bush, Cheney Part of Plame Leak?

Monday October 3, 2005
On Sunday, ABC's George Stephanopolous said that "a source close to [the investigation] told me this week that President Bush and Vice President Cheney were actually involved in some of these discussions" about Valerie Plame. Editor & Publisher hypothesizes that Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald may be preparing a conspiracy charge. Others suggest the focus on I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Cheney's chief of staff, has intensified.

The Plame case moved to center stage this week when NY Times reporter Judith Miller agreed to testify about her conversations with Libby. Miller has spent 85 days in jail rather than testify before the grand jury. News reports have presented conflicting explanations of why she chose to testify this week. Some suggest that her being able to limit her testimony to Libby suggests the Vice President's aide has become central to closing the investigation. This grand jury is scheduled to close on 28 October.
