Hurricane Wilma Ties Records (updated)
Tuesday October 18, 2005
Update:
Wilma is the 12th hurricane of the 2005 season and is projected to become a major hurricane. Long-range forecasts, which have a high probability of error, have Wilma hitting south Florida on Saturday en route to the Gulf. Florida was hit by four hurricanes in 2004 and has been hit by three in 2005.
We have now tied the busiest tropical storm season on record, set in 1933, and the record for most hurricanes in a season, set in 1969. Wilma, tropical storm number 21, formed in the Carribean Monday. Forecasters predict the storm could hit the US Gulf Coast this weekend. According to NOAA, "There's no scenario now that takes it toward Louisiana or Mississippi, but that could change."
Four storms have already formed this month, double the average for October. Hurricane season runs through 30 November; Wilma is the last name on the 2005 list. This season has birthed 21 named storms: 11 hurricanes, five of them major. The seasonal average is 10 named storms with six hurricanes (two major).
