Citizens Just Say No At the Polls

Wednesday November 9, 2005
Whatever your opinion on ballot initiatives, this year the voters just said "no" to most measures. In California, all eight are failing with 91 percent of the votes counted. A proposal to amend the Constitution to change the budget process failed in New York. Texans approved a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, but Maine "rejected a bid to repeal the state's LGBT civil rights protections." New Jersey passed a measure to "to allow some revenue from the taxes levied on businesses to be used to put soot-reducing filters on publicly owned or operated diesel trucks and buses." And in Washington, only one of six -- an anti-smoking measure -- appeared to win favor.
