Most Americans, CRS, Believe Warrants Necessary for Domestic Spying
Monday January 9, 2006
An Associated Press poll shows that most Americans (56%) believe the government should be required to first obtain a warrant before tapping the overseas phone calls and e-mails of US citizens, although there are clear demographic differences in the response. A greater percentage of young people believe the warrant is needed: nearly two-thirds of those age 18-29. Of those polled who are older than 65, opinion split down the middle. The importance of civil liberties is also party-related: almost three-fourths of Democrats but only one-third of Republicans believe warrants are necessary. Poll methodology. A analysis from the Congressional Research Service concluded that "the administration's justification for the warrantless eavesdropping authorized by President Bush conflicts with existing law and hinges on weak legal arguments."
