State of the Union

Wednesday February 1, 2006
Updated: 7.45 pm Eastern
Full text of the President's State of the Union address. The President asserted that the US is addicted to oil (not for the first time) while vowing to remain aggressively engaged abroad.

From around the blogosphere: US Liberals Guide Deborah White blogged the event in real time, noting the arrest of Cindy Sheehan for wearing an anti-war T-shirt to the event (taken away in handcuffs). Didn't know that the State of the Union address had a dress code for normal citizens, but the San Francisco Chronicle called her attire a "violation of House rules." The T-shirt read "2,245 and how many more?'' which is a reference to the number of Americans killed in Iraq. Here is the House dress code for members as well as the press. Can't find a dress code for lay folks. Oh. Wait. It was a mistake?

US Conservatives Guide Amy Hess highlights key portions of the speech, writing about Iraq: "Liberals have worked hard to slam the effort in Iraq in every way, pretty much demanding that America fail. They seem to long for failure, because they want George W. Bush to fall on his face." Others in the conservative blogosphere are concerned about manimals, but the rhetoric, as usual, may not be black-and-white. In true capitalist fashion, you can buy the t-shirt at Cafe-Press.

The speech was unusually long on foreign policy, a welcome message to Keith Porter, About's Guide to Globalization. And Kevin Drum (Political Animal) gives kudos to the proposal to "increase spending on basic research and encourage more kids to take AP math and science courses ." He also notes "reduced R&D funding [is a problem] partly of his own making since Bush's most recent budget cut funding for science and assigned most of what research funding remained to applied research."

Missing or light on details: domestic issues tax reform and health care
