Ohio City to Re-Vote After Diebold Over-votes
Tuesday February 7, 2006
One set of Ohio citizens will cast 2005 votes a second time on Tuesday, using paper ballots and an optical scan system. After electronic voting machines from Ohio-based Diebold recorded more votes than voters last fall, the city of Carlisle, Ohio contested the results. The Montgomery County Common Pleas Court ordered another referendum on a proposed levy for the Carlisle Fire Department and ordered Montgomery County to pay for the special election, which is taking place in neighboring Warren County as well as Montgomery County, which is still using Diebold equipment.
News reports at the time suggested poll worker error. Steve Harsman, director, Montgomery County Board of Elections , said, "[P]oll workers incorrectly encoded voter cards that are used to bring up the ballots on the electronic machines..." resulting in at least 225 votes "in precincts with only 148 registered voters."
