South Dakota Bans Abortion

Friday February 24, 2006
The South Dakota House of Representatives approved HB 1215 sometime after 1 pm today. The bill "reinstate[s] the prohibition against certain acts causing the termination of an unborn human life" -- in other words, it would ban abortion; there are no exceptions for rape or incest or the mother's health, according to Bloomberg.

Planned Parenthood, which operates the sole abortion clinic in SD, plans to file suit; expect it to go all the way to the Supreme Court, as this is a direct challenge to Roe v Wade.

Governor Mike Rounds (R) has five days to act; he is inclined to sign it.
