Immigration: A Republican Albatross

Monday April 10, 2006
As Congress adjourns for Easter recess with competing visions of where America should head with immigration, columnist John McIntyre reminds us that the Hispanic community is the "single largest growing demographic in American politics... Had John Kerry been able win the same percentage of the Hispanic vote as Al Gore in 2000, he would have won the presidency."

I disagree with all of McIntyre's proposals (he's gung-ho for the House-bill fence) but concur with his political damage assessment.

In this debate, the Rs look more like the Ds ... in that their leadership is divided and they can't agree on a message. Some say that this is normal operating procedure for Democrats, but it is an unusual move for modern Republicans. Unless it is resolved -- and I'm not sure how the Rs can please both their conservative base and current-and-future immigrants -- the issue will be an albatross in the fall elections.
