Business Ads on Global Warming: Disinformation

Thursday May 25, 2006
An analysis of the Science articles referenced in a series of ads on global warming shows that they misrepresent the research that purports to support their claims. The ads are part of a 14 city campaign launched by the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI).

Moreover, editors at Science and reseachers whose work has been purloined are crying "Foul!" over the sleight-of-hand.
"These television ads are a deliberate effort to confuse and mislead the public about the global warming debate," according to Curt Davis, director of the Center for Geospatial Intelligence at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

"The text of the CEI ad misrepresents the conclusions of the two cited Science papers and our current state of knowledge by selective referencing," said Dr. Brooks Hanson, deputy editor, physical sciences, Science.
CEI issued a statement in response to the criticism.

I'd say "go read the articles yourself," except that Science has these two behind a firewall -- so you'll need to go to your local library. Perhaps Science will decide it's in the public interest to move these two articles out of the "pay to view" portion of their website.
