Memorial Day Reading at About.com

Monday May 29, 2006
Enjoy your Memorial Day holiday, which grew from its Civil War roots in 1868 (as Decoration Day) to become a national holiday (Congressional action, 1971) which is observed the last Monday in May. This day is also Confederate Memorial Day in Virginia.

If there's a (serious) movie in your future, consider An Inconvenient Truth, acccording to Larry West (who gives it five stars).

Wondering what Congress needs to do when it returns from recess? Tom Head analyzes the competing immigration bills passed in Congress; next step is conference committee. The "unexpected bedfellows award" goes to MoveOn and the Christian Coalition -- which have joined ranks, Deborah White tells us, to do battle in Congress for internet network neutrality (or, as I prefer to call it, to oppose network discrimination).

Globalization Guide Keith Porter muses about China and the Internet. Jennifer Brea tells us that Shell Oil is trying to wiggle out of a $1.5 billion payment for environmental degradation in Nigeria.

Closing with things warlike: The Department of Energy will not be testing 700 tons of conventional explosives, according to Robert Longley. And Amy Hess writes that Jesse MacBeth is a hoax, not an Iraq war vet.
