Senate Vote A Repeat of 2004 : No On Constitutional Amendment

Primarily along party lines, the Senate failed (49-48) to end debate and proceed to a vote on SJR 1, The Marriage Amendment to the US Constitution. A motion to end debate requires a three-fifths vote. In 2004, the vote was 49-50.

Republicans voting No: Gregg (R-NH), McCain (R-AZ), Snowe (R-ME), Specter (R-PA), Sununu (R-NH)
Democrats voting Yes: Byrd (D-WV), Nelson (D-NE)
Not voting: Dodd (D-CT), Hagel (R-NE), Rockefeller (D-WV)
