In 1971, the New York Times began publishing the Pentagon Papers -- a secret study which detailed America's involvement in the Vietnam War. It wasn't flattering. In 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall to the Supreme Court; he became the first black justice. And in 1966, the Supreme Court issued the "Miranda" ruling which requires police to tell suspects their constitutional rights before questioning.
