Update: Coulter Publisher Stands By Her

Tuesday July 11, 2006
According to Fox, both Universal Press Syndicate and the Crown Publishing Group have stood by Ann Coulter in the face of allegations of plagiarism. In a prepared statement, UPS says, "There are only so many ways you can rewrite a fact and minimal matching text is not plagiarism."

I said last week that I wasn't going to hold my breath, but it looks like my prediction that a researcher might be fired was too harsh. However, I assure you that had a student wrote a paper with those examples, or many of these, I'd judge it plagiarism. Because UPS is wrong -- it's not just the similar-sounding or exactly-phrased text, it's the lack of sourcing that makes writing like this an example of plagiarism. Use other folks ideas -- no problem! Just give them credit.
