Ex-State Department Official Source of Plame Leak

Wednesday August 30, 2006
Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage -- Colin Powell's right-hand-man -- was the source for columnist Robert Novak's 2003 leak that Valerie Plame was a CIA agent, according to news reports.

Eight days after her husband, Joseph Wilson, wrote a column accusing the Bush Administration of misstating that Iraq had sought "yellowcake" from Niger, Novak revealed to the world that Plame was a spy. The revelation launched a special investigation and a perjury charge against "Scooter" Libby, former chief of staff to Vice President Cheney.

(1) Joe Blough says:

If Armitage was the source of the information that identified Plame as a CIA operative, then why wasn’t he charged with revealing Plame’s identity? And why would Armitage know anything about Plame in the first place? Who within the CIA told him?
