Since 1789, only 2 percent of members of Congress have been women. The global average percentage of women in parliments is now 17 percent; in the 110th Congress, it is 16 percent. As Nancy Pelosi assumes leadership of the US House of Representatives today, the first woman to do so, let's look at other milestones for women in politics in the United States.
