Will Bush Act On Global Warming?

Tuesday January 23, 2007
In tonight's State of the Union address, will President Bush address global warming? The CEOs of 10 major corporations have signed a joint statement calling for mandatory caps on greenhouse gas emissions.

The 10 companies: Alcoa, BP America, Caterpillar, DuPont, Duke Energy, Florida Power & Light, General Electric, Lehman Brothers, PNM Resources, Pacific Gas & Electric.

Major oil companies are routinely placing one and two-page ads in business magazines like Fortune, talking about the need for conservation and alternative fuel development.

And yet in Texas, there's a move afoot to build 11 old-tech (19th century) coal-fired power plants, according to the latest issue of Rolling Stone (not online). This week, Jeff Bingaman and Barbara Boxer wrote an op-ed in the Dallas Morning News, putting firms considering actions like this on notice: "Utilities that rush new coal plants now won't get bigger emission breaks later."

Will he or won't he?

Watch for USP coverage of the SotU address after midnight, Pacific.
