Immigration Compromise Announced

Thursday May 17, 2007
The New York Times and Washington Post report that Senate leadership has negotiated a deal with the White House on immigration.

Not too surprisingly, right-leaning pundits like Right Wing News call this a "sell out" or a "bad deal." Michele Malkin calls it an "amnesty sellout." Bill West at the CounterTerrorism blog says the compromise is a "national security disaster."

However, as Deborah White explains, "Illegal immigration into the US is highly profitable for both employers and the US government." And Mickey Kaus at Slate insists that "[t]he country is not in crisis, only Bush."

It's a complex issue with no easy answers. As with many things (murder investigations, legislative analysis) there are two questions to ask: who benefits and by how much?
