Senate Fails In No Confidence Move

Monday June 11, 2007
The Washington Post reports that the Senate failed to address a non-binding resolution expressing no confidence in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, even though Sen. Arlan Specter (R-PA) said he would support voting on the resolution. On a vote of 53-38, Republicans successfully filibustered the resolution, authored by Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-NY); 60 votes were needed.

Specter, the minority chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said that the Department of Justice "is in shambles" -- blunt testimony to the US Attorneys scandal and the latest news about immigration judges.

Text of the resolution:

SJR 14 (pdf)

It is the sense of the Senate that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales no longer holds the confidence of the Senate and of the American people.

Roll Call Vote:
Democrats voting no:
Lieberman (ID-CT)
Republicans voting yes:
Coleman (R-MN), Collins (R-ME), Hagel (R-NE), Smith (R-OR), Snowe (R-ME), Specter (R-PA), Sununu (R-NH)
Not voting:
Biden (D-DE), Brownback (R-KS), Coburn (R-OK), Dodd (D-CT), Johnson (D-SD), McCain (R-AZ)
Not Present: Stevens (R-AK)

Does Gonzales have your confidence?
