McCain Trails Paul In Money Race; Campaign Staff Leaving

Tuesday July 10, 2007
The Libertarian-cum-Republican Ron Paul -- Congressman from Texas District 14 -- is leading Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in the Republican war chest race for the 2008 Presidential nomination.

Whether McCain fired them or wehther they quit, McCain's campaign is now short four key aides: campaign manager Terry Nelson, chief strategist John Weaver, political director Rob Jesmer and deputy campaign manager Reed Galen. Longtime confident Mark Salter, McCain's chief of staff and co-author of his five books, has left the campaign payroll but remains a volunteer adviser.

The exodus occurred two weeks after campaign disclosure requirements revealed McCain's candidacy has only $2 million in the bank. ("Only" $2 million.) Paul, on the other hand, is a dark horse candidate with $2.4 million in hand, most of it from online donations.
