Sen. Craig In Hot Seat

Monday August 27, 2007
Hugh Hewitt calls for the resignation of Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID).

Craig, 63, pled guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct after being arrested in June, at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport, for lewd conduct in a men's restroom. Hold your noise and, as Hewitt says, read the police statement. (tip)

Craig has resigned his advisory position with the Mitt Romney campaign for President. The Romney campaign has also pulled a Craig endorsement video from YouTube.

ArchPundit has Craig's 1999 comments on Bill Clinton's peccadillos.

Craig was the Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee from 1997 until 2003. He is ranking member of the Committee on Veterans' Affairs and a member of both the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and Appropriations Committee. He has served on the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association since 1983.

One-third of the Senate is up for grabs each election cycle. In 2008, 22 of 34 contested seats (one special election) are held by Republicans.

The Idaho Statesman reports that if Craig were to run and be re-elected in 2008, "he would be the longest-serving Idahoan in Congress ever."

Big question: who leaked the story? It's been public info -- but under the radar -- for three weeks.
