Virginia Congresswoman Dies of Breast Cancer

Sunday October 7, 2007
Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-VA), the first woman Republican elected to Congress by Virginians, has died of breast cancer at her home in Gloucester. She was elected to Virginia's First District in 2000. Davis, 57, was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.

Unlike the case of Sen. Larry Craig (R-NV), where the Governor (a Republican) has the power to appoint a replacement, this requires a special election. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) will pick the date. It could be as soon as 6 November, which is when state and local elections are scheduled. Virginia has 11 Congressional seats; eight are held by Republicans, and three, Democrats.

Whomever wins will stand for re-election in November 2008.
