Romney Quits

From Kathy Gill, About.com GuideFebruary 7, 2008

Follow me on:

Mitt Romney has withdrawn his candidacy for the Republican nomination for President. So, for all intents and purposes, that race is also down to two, although I'd argue there is more separating John McCain and Mike Huckabee than Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. From the NYT:
Mr. Romney faced a series of enormous challenges in the campaign, not the least of which was trying to reconcile the moderate political views he espoused as the governor of Massachusetts, a liberal state, with the more conservative views he championed on the campaign.
This tension has puzzled me ... because "conservative" voters like those in North Dakota seemed to be his base.

Update:Transcript of his speech to the Conservative Political Action Committee.

What exactly do he mean by this statement: “If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror,”. Thats an honest question that I would like an answer to. Thanks.

Hi, Z — my interpretation (I don’t *know* the answer) is that he wants to avoid the ugly /internal/ political campaigning that is beginning to go on on the Democratic side. In addition, the longer there is a “contest” for the nominee, the shorter the period the actual candidate has to be positioned as the sole voice of the party (the election is about 2 months after the conventions).

It also makes him a more viable Veep candidate, IMO.

Wow?

You don’t see that Romney is saying that if Republican doesn’t win the race that the terrorists win?

Thank You Kathy for the clarification. To Rock, I’ve never been afraid to ask a question about things I do not know or understand. As far as your statement goes, its apparent that I didnt know. Im only 24 yrs old. There’s a lot of things about Politics that I do not know and have yet to learn, and that was the point of my question. Im not here to argue or exchange words with anyone.

Hi, Z — you’re welcome. And bravo for being willing to ask a question.

I left out the not-so-veiled implication that if the Ds win we will have another terrorist attack. This is pretty much stock-and-parcel of the R message this election cycle. You’ll hear more of it as we get closer to November.

I wonder how they can possibly think that with Bush being the president at the time of 9/11. In my opinion, if they have OUR interest at heart, why not work together instead of all this constant back and forth. It really makes them look selfish and childish. Like the only interest they really have is getting in the White House. I really dont know any of the canidates very well, but Im trying to read up on them as much as possible. Im undecided at this point. My state voted last Tuesday, but with everything going on…I didnt even place a vote. I dont consider myself a democrat or republican. Im basically for whoever can do the job and do it right. Its amazing how we call ourselves the “United States” when we are so divided.
