On 30 March 1870, the 15th Amendment to the Constitution, which gave all male citizens the right to vote regardless of race, became effective. It would be another 50 years before women were granted suffrage (26 Aug 1920) after 36 states ratified the 19th Amendment (18 Aug 1920).
