There's Still An Election Going On!
First up, Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), who was found guilty last month on seven felony accounts related to undisclosed gifts, has not yet been tossed out on his tush. Why? Scuttlebutt has it Alaskans are proud of the pork for which Stevens is so famous.
The first count is still going on, and Stevens is in a virtual tie with Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. I've been told by a newsie in Alaska that "slow voting is due to the rules allowing for ballots to be mailed in, and mail service in Alaska from rural areas is super-slow."
In my home state of Georgia, incumbent Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss missed a majority by a nose, 49.8% to Democratic challenger Jim Martin’s 47%. That means a run-off on Tuesday 2 December. Run-offs typically have far fewer voters than in the general; the candidate that can get out the vote has the advantage. Resources from both parties are pouring in.
And then there's Minnesota!
Minnesota may seem an unlikely spot for a celebrity challenge, but nevertheless, this is where Democrat and comedian Al Franken is challenging freshman Republican Sen. Coleman. It's a vritual tie; 2.9 million votes cast and Coleman leads 41.99% to 41.98%. Yes there will be a recount. Yes there will be protests of voting irregularities.
