45 B.C. For the first time, New Year's Day is celebrated on January 1 as the Julian calendar (named after Julius Caesar) goes into effect.

1901: World celebrates what is regarded as the start of the new century.

1908: The first ball is dropped in New York City's Times Square to mark the New Year.

2000: The predicted computing breakdown due to the use of two-digit year abbreviations in applications (the year 2000 problem) fails to materialize.
