1801: The Presidential electoral tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr is resolved when Jefferson is elected President of the United States and Burr Vice President by the United States House of Representatives. Republican Jefferson defeated incumbent Federalist John Adams 73 to 65 electoral votes, but electors failed to distinguish between presidential and vice presidential candidates, giving both Jefferson and Burr 73 votes.

1819: The United States House of Representatives passes the Missouri Compromise.

1864: When the Confederate sub "HL Hunley" sinks the Union ship "Housatonic" it became the first submarine to sink an enemy ship.

1865: Columbia SC burns down during the Civil War.

1933: The US Senate approves the Blaine Act, ending prohibition.

1964: US Supreme court affirms one-man, one-vote in Westberry vs Sanders [376 U.S. 1, 17 (1964)]: "No right is more precious in a free country than that of having a choice in the election of those who make the laws under which, as good citizens, they must live. Other rights, even the most basic, are illusory if the right to vote is undermined."
