George Mason (11 Dec 1725 - 7 Oct 1792) of Stafford County, Virginia. Member of Virginia state legislature, 1759, 1776-80, 1786-88; helped to draft Virginia's first constitution. Member, U.S. Constitutional Convention, 1787-88. Pressed for a Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution; persuaded Federalists, such as James Madison, of the need for amendments safeguarding individual rights. Mason County Kentucky and West Virginia are named for him, as is George Mason University.
