U.S. Secretary of Labor, 1969-70 (Nixon); U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, 1972-74 (Nixon); U.S. Secretary of State, 1982-89 (Reagan, Bush). Member, Council on Foreign Relations. Survived assassination attempt in South America, August 1988. Received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989.
