  • 1788: Georgia enters the Union as the fourth state. Named after King George II, Georgia was first settled in 1733, by a group of British debtors led by English philanthropist James E. Oglethorpe established the town of Savannah.
  • 1811: Senator Timothy Pickering, a Federalist from Massachusetts, is the first senator to be censured by the Senate for publicly revealing secret documents. Pickering was George Washington's adjutant general during the Revolutionary War and President Washington's postmaster general and secretary of war.
