  • 1883: The U.S. Civil Service Commission was established.
  • 1920: Prohibition began, the result of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
  • 1944: Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower took command of the Allied invasion force in London.
  • 1988: Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder was fired as a CBS sports commentator one day after telling a TV station in Washington, D.C., that, during the era of slavery, blacks had been bred to produce stronger offspring.
  • 1991: The White House announced the start of Operation Desert Storm to drive Iraqi forces out of Kuwait
  • 1997: Two bomb blasts an hour apart rocked a building containing an abortion clinic in Atlanta, injuring six people.
  • 2003: The space shuttle Columbia and its crew of seven blasted off from Cape Canaveral, marking it's last flight. The shuttle broke up during its return descent on Feb. 1, killing everyone on board.
