Does immigration have a positive or negative impact on the US?

US Politics Poll

Immigration reform -- expanding the number of legal immigrants and blocking access to the country by illegals -- is a major political issue. President Bush has historically support a guest worker program (no citizenship option). Business wants access to a larger pool of cheaper labor; Americans fear illegal immigration destroys the nation's integrity.

The US has a self-image as a "melting pot" -- where people from around the world come to live and then fully assimilate. Others see the US as a stew, where others come to live and contribute to the flavor and texture of the culture, but with some of their identity intact. As in the past, the issue of immigration (what, how, who, how many) is again on the political front-burner.
