What Is The Coattail Effect?

From About.com

Definition: A "coattail" is "the loose back part of a coat that hangs below the waist," according to FreeDictionary.com.

In politics, the "coattail effect" describes the what happens when a very popular candidate -- usually for President -- helps sweep other members of his party into office.

How can this happen? The excitement of the election may help to increase voter turnout or voters may be inclined to vote a "straight party" ticket. The reverse usually happens two years later, when the party loses seats in Congress.
