The progressive organization MoveOn ran a controversial ad in the New York Times with the headline "General Petraeus or General Betray Us."

The text of the ad questioned his Congressional testimony.

Republican Presidential Candidate Rudy Giuliani made political hay by contending that MoveOn got a sweet deal from the NY Times on the cost of the ad.

On 20 September 2007, the US Senate voted 72-25-3 to condemn "personal attacks" directed at "General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces."
