CIA/Pentagon: No WMD in Iraq

Tuesday April 26, 2005
In an addendum to its September 2004 report, the head of the Iraq Survey Group (ISG) has announced that the search for WMD has "gone as far as feasible" and found no evidence that WMD were moved to Syria. According to Fox: "After more than 18 months, the WMD investigation and debriefing of the WMD-related detainees has been exhausted." Vice President Cheney disagreed with its conclusions last year.

Like reports before and after this one, it concludes that the 1991 Gulf War effectively disarmed Iraq. Earlier this month, the Guardian reported a similiar indictment of intelligence activity in the UK: "We are concerned at the amount of intelligence on Iraqi WMD that has now had to be withdrawn."

The ISG continued work that had been carried out by the UN under Hans Blix prior to the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq. It consisted of a 1400-member team coordinated by the Pentagon and CIA. In January 2004, the head of the ISG, David Kay, resigned, saying that he did not believe WMD would be found in Iraq.
