Immigration Remains On The Front Burner

Wednesday April 5, 2006
Immigration remains a heated topic -- inside and outside of the Beltway. About's Guide to Liberal Politics, Deborah White, reports that Chicago priests began a hunger strike Wednesday in support of the Senate Judiciary Committee's bipartisan immigration bill.

Conservative Politics Guide Amy Hess implies agriculture is the chief employer of undocumented workers. Hmmm ...I don't know. The discussion in the US Politics Forum sounds like construction, gardening and house/office cleaning are the chief culprits. Anyone have data?

We want to avoid the situtation currently embroiling France. Youth unemployment, Jennifer Brea tells us, is 26-50% in Paris ... and yet legislation would make it easier for employers to fire those under age 26. The 15,000 LA students who walked out of class last week organized the event on MySpace.com, which is better known for its singles scene.

Finally, columnist Fareed Zakaria echos my assertion that "guest worker" status without a path to citizenship is the road to ruin. (tip)
