What's The Word for Chutzpah in Spanish?
Sunday April 16, 2006
Spanish-language ads -- funded by the National Republican Party -- that are scheduled to run next week in Las Vegas, Reno, Tucson and Phoenix will accuse Democrats of "vot[ing] to treat millions of hardworking immigrants as felons."
The ad also attacks Sen. Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), even though the bill in question is House Bill 4437. The bill was fast-tracked by Republican leadership in December (from introduction to full vote in 10 days) and the final vote was 239-182: Republicans, 203 for - Democrats, 164 against. Only 36 Democrats voted for the bill -- and only 17 Republicans voted against.
The New Mexico Republican party is sponsoring a similar ad in Albuquerque and Las Cruces. Not only is this the epitome of chutzpah, it points to the fact that truth-in-advertising is AWOL where political ads are concerned. From the Las Vegas Sun. (tip 1 and 2)

500,000 people in Los Angeles. 1,000 in Biloxi, Mississippi; 500 here in Jackson. How did that happen? Well, I certainly didn’t hear much about the Jackson protest in advance–but that didn’t stop us from having ten times as many Hispanics protesting as the pro-life lobby could muster in favor of the abortion ban last month.
The Republican Party is showing its ignorance of how Hispanic communities operate, where word of mouth is credible but media claims are taken with a grain of salt. Hispanics in these states will know that their intelligence is being insulted–except in cases where their local Democratic representative voted for HR 4437, in which case they’ll already know that, too, thanks to the new generation of Hispanic activists (who have established their credibility within these word of mouth networks).
All in all, this is a classic “Bart Simpson is sleeping with your wife” intel goof. It shows outright stupidity on the part of party leaders, who have just demonstrated that they know absolutely nothing about Hispanic culture.
Cheers,
TH
thanks, tom … i was astounded at the duplicity, as you can see.
I dunno what you’re talking about in this article, but the word you’re looking for is ‘cojones’.
