Buzz on Obama; More on Gitmo; Libby's On Trial

Wednesday January 17, 2007
Buzz today has, predictably, centered around yesterday's annoucement by Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) that he has set up an exploratory committee, a necessary step for raising money for a presidential candidacy. He'll announce whether or not intends to run on 10 February in Chicago.

The National Ledger in Arizona calls him "the Colin Powell of 2008 -- a charismatic leader with a quintessentially American backstory and an appeal that transcends traditional divisions." Will he or will he not throw his hat into the ring?

Stimson Apologizes
In the ongoing story about Charles Stimson's denigrating remarks about American lawyers ... Stimson has apologized. He said:
[M]y comments left the impression that I question the integrity of those engaged in the zealous defense of detainees in Guantanamo. I do not."
Stimson is a former JAG, and he concluded with this statement: "I hope that my record of public service makes clear that those comments do not reflect my core beliefs."

I think his core beliefs came out in the radio interview and in the "off the record" comment to the Wall Street Journal. What do you think?

Libby Trial Begins
Finally, the trial of Scooter Libby began on Tuesday with jury selection.

Hi,

I believe that makes Stimson a guy who doesn’t stand for its real convictions. And by the way, he is the typical example of some reps who are so strongly stubborn about what they believe is right that they are ready to throw away everything which separates the US from a totalitarian state. Like the basic rights of anyone accused to be represented by a lawyer. Or the even more basic right of people being arrested to actually contact one and be prosecuted within a reasonable amount of time, etc…

Thank you for calling a spade a spade. It may be cruel, but I think Stimson and his ilk should be made to go through the same thing another US citizen is now going through:

Then we would see how much more passionately he will argue for those who have no recourse.
