Fourth Senator Announces Retirement

Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH) has announced he will not seek a third term, making him the fourth Republican to announce retirement.

• Sen. Sam Brownback (R) of Kansas, announced 20 December 2008
• Sen. Mel Martinez (R) of Florida, announced 2 December 2008
• Sen. George Voinovich (R) of Ohio, announced 12 January 2009

In addition, Delaware Gov. Ruth Miller is appointing Ted Kaufman to fill the unexpired term vacated after Joe Biden resigns (15 January 2009) to assume the vice presidency. Kaufman has indicated that he will not run in the 2010 special election for the seat which extends through 2014.
