Only three of the seven Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee voted against confirmation (12-3) of Gen. Michael Hayden as the head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) called him an "outstanding choice" to head the CIA. Hayden would be the 20th chief of the spy agency; he is at the center of controversy surrounding Bush Administration intelligence gathering practices.

Hayden would be the first active duty military officer to serve in this role since February 1953 and the first military officer to serve as CIA chief in 25 years. Only six of the 19 chiefs have been military officers.

Voting against confirmation:Evan Bayh (D-IL), Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR).

Voting for confirmation: Christopher Bond (R-MO), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Mike Dewine (R-OH), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Chuck Hagel (R-NE), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Carl Levin (D-MI), Trent Lott (R-MS), Pat Roberts (R-KS), John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.VA) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME).
